Information on the form of the state final examination

The State Final Examination is held before a committee appointed by the Dean of the Faculty. The committee is composed of at least 5 members. The chair of the committee conducts the state final examination. In the absence of the chair of the committee, the vice-chair of the committee appointed by the dean takes over his/her duties and powers. The secretary of the State Final Examination or the secretary of the commission is present and takes the minutes. The process of the state final examination may vary, depending on the practices of the department which organises the examination. Each department has a designated final examination secretary who is responsible for communicating information to students about the final examination process. This secretary will inform you of the date and venue of the State Final Examination. If you are not contacted directly by the secretary well in advance of the final examination, ask your thesis supervisor who the secretary is and then contact him/her. The thesis supervisor may be present at the final examination.
The state final examination consists of two parts.
  • Defence of the final thesis (about 30 minutes)
  • Examination of three topics (subjects) defined in the accreditation document of the study programme (approx. 3 times 10-15 minutes)
  1. Defence of the final thesis
The student is introduced to the committee and invited by the chair of the committee to give a presentation that summarizes the objectives, progress of the work and conclusions arising from the results of the thesis. The recommended length of the presentation is 10-12 minutes (may be specified by the state final examination secretary). The permitted language of the presentation (the text of the presentation and the student's own speech, including answers to questions) is Czech, Slovak in the case of a study programme in the Czech language. The permitted language of the presentation (text of the presentation and the student's own speech, including answers to questions) is English only in the case of a study programme in English. At the end of the presentation, the supervisor of the final thesis will read his/her report and afterwards the opponent will read his/her report and ask the student questions from the report, which the student has been familiar with sufficiently in advance. The student will answer the opponent's questions. A discussion of the thesis will then take place between all members of the committee and the opponent. During the discussion, anyone may ask the student questions about the topic of the thesis. The Chair, at his/her discretion, taking into account the time, will close the discussion and the entire thesis defence.
  2. Examination in three topics (subjects)
The Chair will invite each examiner in turn to ask a question of the student from the list of questions for the relevant subjects. Immediately after the question has been asked, the student answers orally and writes on the board to the extent required by the examiner. After the last examiner has announced that he or she has completed his or her examination, the Chairperson shall close the second part of the examination and invite the student to leave the examination room for a moment.

The committee will discuss the evaluation of the defence, taking into account the grades of the thesis advisor, the thesis opponent, and the student's performance in presentation and discussion, as well as the grades of the individual courses. The student is then invited back to the examination room. The Chair will inform the student whether he/she has defended the final thesis and with what result he/she has passed the final examination: pass with distinction, pass or fail. The detailed results will be given to the student either immediately or after the end of the (morning/afternoon) block of the final examination. The detailed results are: the grade for the thesis defence, the three grades for the relevant topics and the overall grade for the final exam.

A report of the final examination is drawn up and signed by all committee members and the student. By signing the final examination report, the student only indicates that he/she has read the content of the report, not that he/she agrees or disagrees with the result of the final examination.

Possible variants of the results of the final state examination

  • Pass with distinction or pass.
  • Fail - the student did not defend the final thesis but successfully passed all three topics. Depending on the scope recommended by the committee, the student's thesis must be completed, corrected, or redone in its entirety. The committee's recommendation is part of the state final examination record. The student is informed of the next steps by the final examination secretary or directly by the Faculty Study Department.
  • Fail - the student defended the final thesis but was classified in one, two or all three topics with a grade of F. In this case, the student repeats the second part of the final state examination in the next following term of the final state examination. The examination is repeated in the retake term only for the topics in which the student was classified with a grade of F. The student is informed of the next course of action by the State Final Examination Secretary or directly by the faculty's Study Department.
  • Fail - the student has failed to defend the final thesis and has been classified in one, two or all three topics with a grade of F. In this case, the procedure is according to point 2) for the final thesis and according to point 3) for the repeat of the final thesis. The student is informed of the next course of action by the State Final Examination Secretary or directly by the Study Department of the Faculty.
