SMART Vacuum Gripping Systems – Modular design for fast custom production

Vacuum gripping heads are commonly used to ensure flexible handling in industrial operations. The designer engineer decides between two strategies: the use of standard components that provide a cost-effective but weight non-optimal solution, or a dedicated solution in which the head weight and line pressure losses can be optimized, but production can be more time consuming and therefore more expensive.

pracoviste/12135/Aktuality/E_Jancarikova_03.pngOur student of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering CTU in Prague Ester Jančaříková develops a solution in her bachelor's thesis, which combines the advantages of both approaches: modular CAD construction of the head ready for production by 3D printing for connection to any robot.

The proposed construction of the CAD geometry of the part allows easy change of the model parameters according to the specific assignment.

After a time-saving modification of the model, rapid data generation follows for cost-effective production by 3D printing. The first prototype has already been constructed and tested for a specific application in Testbed Industry 4.0 at CIIRC CTU. Development work continues on the integration of additional sensors into the head. Additional sensors allow plug-and-produce operation of the designed gripping head.

Research base of engineering production technology in the Czech Republic 

The Institute of Production Machines and Equipment and the Research Center for Mechanical Engineering and Technology (RCMT) represent one joint workplace of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering CTU in Prague, which is focused on research and education in the field of "Machine Tools", ie in the field of machine tools and forming automation and related automation.

The research, educational and modern workplace creates a professional research base for the Czech engineering production industry and explores new solutions for new technologies in the near future.
